Yoga is a tool that we use to try to quieten the mind. Stilling the mind may seem like an impossible task. Most of us assume that we cannot manage thoughts any more than we can manage the wind. We may even think that the inner narrator is who we are, as we most likely have never been taught otherwise.
The Yoga Sutras teach what, for me, was a mind-blowing and transformative concept: believing or assuming that you are your thoughts is a tragic misunderstanding and the root cause of suffering.
The discovery that you are not your thoughts can create a shift and bring a new perspective and relationship to the mind chatter. Many of the practices of yoga guide us to experience this teaching for ourselves.
You may know the phrase “monkey mind” or the saying “The mind is a wonderful servant but a terrible master.” The practices of yoga teach us that the mind is a tool we use to enhance our lives. It should not be in charge. Only when we recognise this misunderstanding can we begin to glimpse who we really are.
One tried-and-true way to quiet thoughts is through the breath.
For most people, breathing techniques are the easiest and quickest way to calm the thoughts. When we place attention on our breath, we can instantly experience the mind/body connection.
No matter where you are on the inner journey, practicing quieting your mind—even for a few moments—can lead to a glimpse of the peaceful spaciousness within.
