Prana

Yoga postures work specifically with different energy centers in the body to promote the healthy flow of prana. Poses that focus on hip opening, for instance, can release stored and often hidden memories and emotions in the second chakra, an energy center located in the hip and sacral area.

Each physical posture targets a specific region of the body, and directing the breath to that area brings balance or healing if needed. Over time, when pranic energy is flowing unimpeded, vitality is restored, and healing across the physical, mental, and emotional bodies can progress.

We can feel the ebb and flow of prana in the body, especially during powerful events such as sorrow. When we are heartbroken or grieving, we may feel a sensation of pain or tightening in the heart and hunch over as the pranic flow contracts.

This can feel protective and supportive at first, but over time, the restriction or blockage of prana can manifest as a lack of vitality or joy and create issues. Placing a hand over the heart and breathing slowly can often restore some energy flow and ease painful sensations.

Yoga practices restore and strengthen the flow of prana that is essential for a healthy, vital life. Tuning in to the energetic aspect of our being enables us to know and potentially experience the rightful relationship of our individual selves to the universal Self.

This relationship, when understood, empowers us to dissolve the barriers and move toward connecting with all beings and dwelling in our natural state of unity.
