Create a Meditation Space

Find a spot in your home that is conducive to sitting quietly with less chance of being disturbed. You may want to set up a cushion on the floor or against a wall so you can lean against it. A chair that allows for a tall spine is also appropriate.

Have a blanket nearby, as your body temperature tends to drop when you’re relaxed, along with any extra cushions you’ll need for support. You may want to create an altar—setting up a shelf or an area with meaningful items such as a spiritual book; a photo; or a natural object like a feather, leaf, or crystal. You can also add a candle and/or incense or essential oils.

Create an environment that is inviting and calming.

Ideally, choose a consistent time of day or night to meditate and set up a premeditation routine. For example, light a candle if it’s safe and/or light incense, or mist an essential oil mixture. Start your meditation the same way each time, such as taking two slow breaths. This or any ritual will signal to the mind/body that it’s time to get quiet and will support a meditation rhythm.

Sometimes, a consistent ritual is not feasible. Don’t let that derail your practice. Setting the kitchen timer for three minutes and taking a seat at the kitchen table works too. You can welcome a pet or a child on your lap. Using a phone alarm for two minutes before a work call can also further a practice.

Recognise the importance of meditation and endeavour to make it a priority.
