Let go of the Story

Set a timer for five to fifteen minutes. Come to a comfortable position, either seated or lying down. Inhale, and as you exhale, feel the skin of your body soften. Take a few more relaxing breaths, scanning your body for any tension.

Now, in a neutral way, bring to mind the roles you take on in the world. Several personas may come up, such as parent, student, yoga practitioner, activist, friend, retiree.

Perhaps you relate as a health care worker or a struggling artist. See your unique story and the many roles you play in the world without judgment.

Take a couple of slow breaths and settle your mind. Allow that story of “you” and your personas to fall away just for now. It’s safe to let them go temporarily; they are just taking a backseat for a little while.

Let the stories drop, feel them peeling away and falling off around you. There’s no role to play now. Breathe. Even though you now have no role, you’re still here. The essence of you behind those outer personas is unchanging and ever present.

Allow this deeper aspect to permeate your being so that it may direct more and more of your life. Stay in this space, breathing and feeling your steady, expansive essence. When the timer rings, deepen your breath and notice how you feel as you continue your day.
