Prana, also known as “life energy”, is the force behind our life itself. It is everything around us and everywhere we look. Having a healthy Prana is needed for proper functioning of the energy that flows in and out of our bodies.
So how do we increase Prana? You have to go to the source of Prana! There are 5 main types of Prana and we will discuss how to find the Prana and how to increase it.
1. Air ~ Pranayama ~ Breath
The main source of Prana is the breath. The yogic practice of Pranayama (Prana means “life force or energy” and yama means “to gain control”) focuses on the breath. Gaining control and practicing the breath will allow you to extract the Prana from air.
2. Food
Another great source of Prana is food. We all know the saying “we are what we eat”. According to Ayurveda, Prana is stored in healthy and fresh food and therefore if we consume healthy and fresh foods every day, we will naturally increase our Prana.
3. Water
Water is a prana, as long as it is alive. What does that mean? Polluted, overly-chemically treated, sitting in LDPE plastic bottled water is not alive. Filtering our tap water will give us a better source of freshwater. Consuming water will elevate your Prana. Swimming in the ocean also increases your Prana.
4. Yoga practice ~ Asana
Daily Asana practice is a wonderful source of Prana. Yoga provides a powerful energy inside of you that helps you to remove any blockages and will promote a free-flowing energy throughout the body. It will allow you to feel an abundance of energy and feel lighter, balanced, open and stronger physically.
5. Sunshine
We need sunshine for us to thrive. The sun has such a strong energy force and we should spend time in the sun to absorb its energy. Consuming warm food and drinks can increase Prana too. Be aware of spending too much time in the sun as too much can be harmful!
